March 19, 2015 - NW TX Mini-Supercells

A marginal setup about 3 hours from home in NW TX. Low level shear and cloud cover hindered this day from being a possible tornado day. Not to mention the advancing cold front chugging south. • These towers were to become the second storm we chased near Archer City/Windthorst.
  • Here's our storm near Lake Kemp (left of picture). Inflow winds would pick up at times giving us hope.
  • The lack of better instability kept the base small and made the storm fight for every second of it's life. Here, the low clouds cleared briefly, showing us our only view of the updraft.

  • There were brief lowerings and base agitation throughout its life.
  • We jumped ahead of the storm, southwest of Electra, to witness the death of it. The cold front was pushing south, creating a brief moment of intensity as a mesocyclone interacted with the enhanced baroclinicity from the cold front. We bailed on this storm about here and continued south towards the storm near Archer City.
  • Just west of Postpak, TX in rural Clay County as the second storm begins to feel the effects of the cold front.
  • As sunset approaches, we get a glimpse of the tower. Its obvious the storm is about to be undercut. The lower clouds on the left were rapidly moving south. The front was plowing south, ending out day.
