July 8, 2015 - TX Panhandle Supercells

A day that started in Union County, NM early on and ended around midnight dodging heavy rain around Amarillo. Our storms in NM lined out, then congealed into one massive supercell that spawned a brief tornado near Boys Ranch. But at that time, we were racing south towards an isolated supercell near Hereford. We witnessed perhaps the most amazing supercell structure of the year for a couple hours into the night. Definitely my most successful July chase so far.

Best rotation we saw with the storm. Nice inflow tail on the right. May have been too high based to produce.

  • South of Clayton, NM as our tour guest, Brian Harrison, takes pics of the developing shelf cloud.
  • After a couple of hours on dirt roads and bouncing between storms, the dominant cell pictured here was approaching Channing, TX.

  • Storm was dropping baseballs at this point in Channing. We were racing south as the storm near Hereford was growing and growing.
  • This 4 pic stitched panoramic was the climax of the chase. We were south of Umbarger, TX looking back at this behemoth space ship updraft at sunset. Took us a good hour of hard driving, but it was so worth it!
  • Put some distance on the storm at dusk.
  • Just incredible structure. We were the only humans to see this storm during this phase. There was no traffic, and this area is very sparsely populated.
  • South of Happy, TX now. The storm still displayed great shelf cloud structure after dark, and the lightning was nicely displayed.
  • Best pic of the night. Nice anvil-splitting bolt with a distant CG.
