April 12, 2015 - Wellington, TX Supercell

Marginal chase day, so I wasn't too quick to leave the house. In fact, I didn't leave until 5:30 pm. Low shear and low instability really limited this day. Yet a supercell near Wellington went crazy for about an hour right at dusk. It gave off a great structure display and good lightning show. One of my best low potential chases I've had.

Our storm when we first saw it. Not too healthy looking, but had a decent flanking line. This was taken northeast of Memphis.

  • Our storm when we first saw it. Not too healthy looking, but had a decent flanking line. This was taken northeast of Memphis.
  • Now east of Wellington, looking west. Lack of road options kept me due east of the storm. I'm starting to learn that's not a bad thing at all. We're getting hailed on with golfballs here.
  • Storm now taking on a tight supercell appearance. I was pleasantly surprised by this time with our storm.
  • Some subtle CC lightning would briefly light the updraft tower up.
  • Twisting, corkscrewing, barber pole updraft. Amazing!
  • Few more miles down the highway to get the base and lightning in the shot. The storm was just incredible at this point!
  • Best shot of the storm I got, with the lightning actually visible. Called it a day after a few more pics and the lightning threat diminishing. Great surprise chase day!
