May 22, 2012 North Dakota Supercell

After an all night's drive from New Mexico, we barely made it to North Dakota in time for the storm that fired in our target area. Berthold, ND to be exact. We briefly saw a funnel 1/3 of the way to the ground, which was reported to touchdown by some of the Vortex 2 crew members. After chasing this event we had to drive to Jamestown, ND for a room.

  • About 3:30 am, we rolled into Nebraska.
  • Caught a gorgeous sunrise near North Platte.
  • Nice desolate location in the Sandhills.

  • Late morning as we entered South Dakota.
  • Passing the VORTEX2 crew in North Dakota.
  • I was worried the thick cloud deck was going to ruin our storm chances.
  • But way back west, a storm fired off the dryline.
  • Scrambling to get there now.
  • Very nice LP structure on our storm near Berthold, ND.
  • Wall cloud begins to form on the right edge, its time to get closer.
  • The RFD begins to cut in.
  • Small needle funnel begins to take shape.
  • Getting a bit better defined.

  • Right about here, reports begin to come in of a brief touchdown.
  • The storm approached us and began to weaken.
  • The guys make a break for Canada.
  • Ended the day with fast food in Minot. Off to Iowa tomorrow.
