June 10, 2009 - SW Missouri Tornadoes

A marginal setup at best. This was my last shot at a tornado away from Texas. I had to drive back the next day. Decent shear and high CAPE down in SE KS/NE OK/SW MO region along a stationary frontal boundary. A weak surface low developed on the KS/MO border. All these things came together to help a cluster of thunderstorms develop in SW Missouri, with one of these storms becoming dominant. We caught 2 different tornadoes from this storm. The first was a small needle tornado, another was a nice elephant trunk tornado. Both near Schell City, MO.

  • These storm clusters looked messy on radar, but showed decent supercell structures up close.
  • The first tornado develops to our east.
  • Just a fine point needle.
  • This tornado eventually made full condensation contact while we were driving closer to it.
  • Just after the tornado lifted. A small weak wall cloud and nice updraft structure here.
  • This funnel poked out behind the weak wall cloud, spinning nicely. Never touched down though.
  • After a short drive through some trees and small hills, we came up to this elephant trunk tornado.
  • Pretty great way to finish out my 2009 season.
